Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang Province. It stands on the lower reaches of the Qiantang River in the Yangtze Delta and at the southern terminus of the Grand Canal. It is the political, economic and cultural centre of the province and one of China`s most important tourist destinations, a must for all visitors on Chinese tours.
It is also a very ancient city, though many of its ancient buildings were destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion in the mid nineteenth century. However, travellers on cultural tours of China enjoy visiting Qing He Fang Street, one of the most ancient parts of the city which remain, which was built during the Southern Song Dynasty between 1127 and 1279 AD. Here visitors may admire the ancient buildings and purchase local goods to take back home. There are also many museums in the city, such as the Tea Museum and the National Silk Museum, which provide visitors on Chinese tours with an insight into Chinese culture.
Hangzhou`s subtropical climate means that it has four quite distinct seasons and so those on vacation in China will find the weather pleasant at all times of the year. It also boasts great natural beauty of which the West Lake is probably the most famous and most beautiful. The Chinese travel guides suggest that those on Chinese tours visit the `Ten West Lake Prospects`which will give the visitors the most beautiful views of lakes, mountains and ancient monuments.
Hangzhou is a also a modern and vibrant city and there is much to entertain anyone on a Chinese tour. There are teahouses overlooking the West Lake where travellers may enjoy a cup of tea whilst they chat. They may also like to taste some of the local dishes. Hangzhou is famous for its quisine and anyone on a Chinese holiday must taste the local fish, fresh from West Lake.
