Hong Kong has supported human life since at least the Stone Age, but, until the nineteenth century, the area was a neglected corner of the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) inhabited by farmers, fishermen and pirates.
Today it is a great, 21st century city and an enigma for any visitor on a Chinese vacation. Hong Kong has its share of smog and city odours. Those on a vacation in this busy Chinese destination will have to deal with both of these and also the rush and bustle of 14 million people with an insane love of clatter. But Hong Kong is also efficient, hushed and peaceful. There is an excellent transport network, the shopping centres are amazing and the temples and quiet corners of the parks are contemplative oases. Visitors on a Chinese vacation will also find many contradictions in this bustling Chinese destination, with its multi-Asian and Western elements.
The one thing that Hong Kong is famed for by all who travel to China, is, of course, the shopping. Shopping in Hong Kong goes way beyond buying things that may be necessary, it is a social activity, a favourite pastime, an after-work relaxation. The best things for anyone on a Chinese vacation to look for are clothes, jewellery and electronics and all of these things can be made to order.
But shopping is not the only interest for the visitor on a Chinese vacation to Hong Kong. There is much interesting Chinese culture also. There are wonderful Taoist temples and Buddhist monasteries. There are fine sandy beaches and exclusive islands. Those on a Chinese vacation may marvel at the tall skyscrapers and visit museums and art galleries to see Chinese antiquities and beautiful Chinese paintings.
Hong Kong will amaze the senses of any visitor on a holiday to this amazing and diverse Chinese destination.
